Fleuroselect is the European
organisation, funded by the seed trade, which tests new
varieties of annuals and bedding plants and gives awards to
the best. Trials are conducted all over Europe from Italy in
the south to Sweden in the north.
Potential new introductions are
grown alongside similar established varieties and assessed
by experts throughout the season. The results are then
collated and the very best varieties are awarded a Gold
Medal while other exceptional varieties are awarded a
Quality Mark. Most seed catalogues mark the award winners
with the appropriate logo.
The organisation was founded in
1971 and at first Gold, Silver and Bronze medals were
awarded but the marking system produced no Gold Medals and
too many Bronze medals. In 1990 the present system was
introduced.
