Every year new varieties are
released by plant breeders all over the world and introduced
by the familiar seed companies. Often, little information
about these varieties is available other than the hyperbolic
text in the seed catalogue so many gardeners appreciate
guidance as to which of these many new varieties really are
worth growing.
Both in Europe and the United
States there are award schemes which recognise the finest
new introductions. In Europe, Fleuroselect awards Gold
Medals to the very best newcomers while other excellent
cultivars are awarded a Quality Mark. These awards are given
after each year's entrants to the scheme are voted upon in
blind trials at sites all over Europe. Similar trials take
place all over the United States and here All-America
Selections give annual awards.
Many fine plants have received
awards under these two well-established schemes.
