Antirrhinum
(Snapdragaon) This the first widely
available snapdragon with variegated foliage. The
leaves are streaked with white and the young shoot
tips are tinted with pink so the plant is striking
before the flowers appear &endash; even in the
seedling stage it looks pretty. The flowers
themselves are a vibrant orange-red shade and stand
out brightly above the variegated leaves. 'Dancing
Flame', which reaches 15-18in.38-45cm in height, is
vigorous and just as easy to grow as other
snapdragons.

This is not the very first variegated snapdragon. I
first grew 'Powys Pride' about five years ago, a
variegated form of 'Coronette Scarlet', and
'Dancing Flame' has been developed from this
variety. In the 1999 Fleuroselect trials there was
an interesting variegated antirrhinum, shorter and
bushier than 'Dancing Flame' but in a mixture of
colors. We'll have to wait a year or two for this
to appear in catalogues.
