Three
Seasons of Summer

This is a most
interesting book, the title of which cleverly makes the
point that annuals are far, far more than a brief summer
flash of colour.
Covering hardy and half hardy annuals and biennials there's
no alphabetical A-Z of plants through which to plod, instead
the book is organised more practically into three main
sections: Summer Begins, Midsummer Glory and Summer Fades.
This emphasises the long season of some varieties as well as
the succession of varieties which come and go as the year
rolls by.
The atmospheric photographs, by the esteemed Dutch
photographer Marijke Heuff, are predominantly of inspiring
annual plantings in an informal style, the close-up shots
making it clear how well they work on a small scale. These
reveal that annuals need not be garish, but can be softly
subtle.
Invaluable practical advice is interwoven amongst the
planting ideas and variety recommendations although, without
an A-Z, gardeners looking for comprehensive information on
individual species and varieties will be disappointed. This
is deeply enthusiastic book, beautifully presented, and a
most enjoyable and inspiring read.
