Annuals

Yearly Classics for the Contemporary
Garden
by

This
colourful book in the Antique Flowers series looks back to
traditional uses for annuals flowers as well as looking to
today's ways with annuals. It takes its inspiration from
some of the classic writings on plants, and quotes from them
along the way, and its presentation is decidedly punchy
compared with that of Cottage Garden Flowers.
Although the book is based on a one hundred page A-Z
portfolio of annuals, there are few strong on
recommendations of contemporary varieties; the book is more
concerned with evoking the character and flavour of the
plants and traditional ways of presenting them in the
garden. Although the book does cover some less often grown
species like runner beans and perilla, in general it's more
an enthusiastic evocation of heirloom annuals in
general.
The pictures are vital to this approach and while many are
used at a large size, the quality is a little variable.
However, for anyone developing an interest in heirloom and
cottage garden annuals this is a valuable contribution to an
expanding bank of writing.
