Cottage
Garden Annuals
by
Clive Lane (1997)

Annuals, and
especially hardy annuals, are essential constituents of the
cottage garden fitting perfectly into the rough and tumble
of this informal style. Clive Lane is along-time stalwart of
the Cottage Garden Society and so the ideal person to write
this book.
This is a very sound guide discussing which annuals are best
in cottage gardens and including useful lists of annuals
with different features and uses: for cutting, shade and
scent, for example, and organised by their shape
spikes, round flowers etc and so on - a very helpful
approach.
This book occupies the same general ground as Annuals
&endash; Yearly Classics for the Contemporary Garden but is
more restrained in its presentation and is more suited to
British gardeners although most of the varieties discussed
are available in the USA and American gardeners will
appreciate this informed British approach to heirloom
annuals.
There are notes the re-introduction of old Victorian cottage
flowers, although he perhaps stretches the point a little
with one or two of his entries, and for gardeners like
myself who dislike modern dumpy varieties and the bedding
schemes in public parks, this book proves that there's a
great deal more to these adaptable plants.
