This year's catalogues
from Suttons Seeds features some excellent new
varieties, a whole new range of flowers and the
return of some old favourites. The catalogue
includes a wide range of utterly dependable flower
varieties including many varieties exclusive to
Suttons, there's also a fine range of vegetables
and some of the best seedlings and young plants
available.
There are also summer bulbs like dahlias, begonias
and gladioli, soft fruit, a selected range of
greenhouse accessories and propagation equipment
and range of organically produced vegetable
seeds.
Their lead flower introductions this year include
Petunia 'Trailblazer Mixed', a blend of
economically priced trailing petunias, the return
of Mimulus 'Viva', first introduced fifteen years
ago, Bidens 'Golden Eye', a pretty yellow-flowered
trailer for baskets originally bred by rivals
Thompson & Morgan, the excellent tall growing
Ageratum 'Red Sea', the trailing Verbena 'Serenity
Mixed and the exclusive pansy blend 'Sweet
Charity'.
The new Barleywood range, chosen by TV gardener
Alan Titchmarsh, features thirty varieties,
including some new to Suttons and some never seen
anywhere before. Calendula 'Kablouna Gold and
Orange', the dwarf sunflower 'Sundance Kid' and the
double opium poppy 'Taffeta' are especially
good.
While Suttons rarely set the world on fire with
startling new innovations, their varieties are
chosen only after testing on their own extensive
trial grounds and they'd rather be right about
their newcomers rather than leap in without being
certain &endash; and sometimes be wrong.
Best new Suttons variety for 2000: Bohemian
Rhapsody Mixture.
Next best Suttons newcomers: Verbena
'Serenity Mixed', Pansy 'Sweet Charity', Ageratum
'Blue Mist' and Mimulus 'Viva'
But think twice about: Petunia 'Trailblazer'
&endash; the plants vary enormously in growth
habit.
