Recent introductions in
annual phlox have developed in two directions. Some
have featured double flowers and in the garden
these are not sufficiently vigorous to make a bold
display. Recent single-flowered types have also
tended to be rather squat. Exceptions include
re-introductions of old varieties and the Buttons
Series.
Buttons is a little taller
than some recent newcomers but unlike many older
varieties it branches well to create a mass of
colour over a long period; the plants can also
accommodate a little intrusion from neighbouring
plants to create interesting associations. The
colour range is constantly increasing and this
'Buttons Cherry with Eye' is one of the best. The
deep red flowers with their bright whete eyes are
delightful.
It makes great companion
with 'MacGregor's Favourite' dark-leaved ornamental
beetroot and the taller Salvia coccinea
'Lady in Red' and bronze-leaved Hibiscus
acetocella behind.
