At Floranova, Britain's internationally renowned
plant breeders, they have a special eye for
petunias. And after the launch of the multi-award
winning yellow flowered 'Prism Sunshine' on the
Evening Standard's Chelsea Flower Show garden in
1997, plant breeder Xenia Cascante has done it
again.
'Strawberry Sundae' is another unique petunia, a
splendid variety for baskets and other containers
and also for any sunny flower beds in the garden. I
first saw it in trials in California in 1996 when
the contrast between its white petals, slightly
blushed, and the spidery red veining really caught
my eye. At this stage it was already many
generations into Xenia's breeding programme, for at
Floranova's Costa Rica research station they can
raise two generations of petunias every year. It's
true that 'Strawberry Sundae' has been less
tolerant of the wet weather in the summer of '98
and after rain look poor in trials; but in most
summers and in especially in sheltered gardens its
performance is excellent.
'Strawberry Sundae' made its public debut at the
1998 Chelsea Flower Show and is listed in the 1999
seed catalogues.
