Nicotiana
(Flowering tobacco) A tiny space in a tightly
packed London garden provides a startling mixed
border display. Two perennial sedums, the
creamy-headed Sedum telephium and the
reddish-bronze leaves of Sedum spurium
'Purple Carpet' are surrounded by more temporary
plants. The slow, sultry rosettes of Aeonium
arboreum 'Atropurpureum' are worth waiting for
while purple-leaved 'Dark Opal' basil is so much
more effective than raggedy-edged 'Purple
Ruffles'. A single spike of the
snapdragon 'Black Prince' peeps through the coleus
'Scarlet Poncho', a single pinching creates this
spread of shoots. Trailing forward from behind are
the pale bells of the dainty Nicotiana
langsdorfii. ©copyright
