For so many years, brachyscomes came in pretty
but rather watery colours in a restricted range of
pale blues, pale lavenders and white; most were
available only as mixtures. The arrival on the
scene of the Bravo Series has changed all that.
Available in three different and distinct
colours, all three come with either a black eye or
a white eye making six different forms in the whole
series. When put together into a formula mixture
the result is the best and most memorable of all
the mixtures. But with all the six colours, like
this 'Bravo White with Black Eye', also available
separately brachyscomes are now suddenly of value
in more thoughtful colour themed plantings.
The pink and yellow flowered forms like
'Strawberry Mousse' and 'Sunshine' which are
becoming increasingly popular from cuttings are not
yet represented in seed raised series, these
actually come from different species so integrating
these shades will take some time.
But why 'Brachyscome'... where has that 's' come
from? Well, the taxonomist who first coined the
name later changed his mind about how it should be
spelt and took out the 's'. But the rules governing
plant names decree that the original name must be
retained. This is exactly the sort of change which
so infuriates gardeners.
