Review in The English
Garden
I love annuals - they're bright,
showy and fun. From a few packs of nondescript, brown seeds
you can create a whole garden - and then another and
another, year after year. Sometimes though, it can be hard
to put a bit of imagination into the sowing. That's where
DISCOVERING ANNUALS by Graham Rice (Frances Lincoln,
£25) comes in. Arranged in alphabetical order, there is
at least one annual (often more) for almost every letter.
Contemporary combinations and fresh ideas show how to make
annuals, both modern introductions and old varieties, work
well together and practical information tells you how to put
this to good effect. Graham Rice's chatty informative text
makes this book a pleasure to read and, on a serious note,
it is refreshing to read a book written by someone prepared
to express his opinions.
